Interesting review. As an old history major, I am a stickler for presenting facts, not drama, so I am not going to pull the trigger on the purchase.
Perhaps the most distracting thing I ever came across was in Norman Davies' otherwise outstanding book on the Polish Home Army's uprising against the Germans in 1944. Bafflingly, he decided that Polish names were too hard to keep track of (Russian names are easier?) and gave each prominent Polish freedom fighter a nickname (Bear Cub?!?). Though not intended as a slight (Davies is an admirer of Polish history and its people), it struck me as disrespectful of the men's heroism.
