Make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy. End the guaranteed student loan system entirely. Any university with an endowment funds can used those funds to finance its own students. Creates a huge incentive to avoid giving out bullshit degrees.

As for the non-brilliant students, what's wrong with mixing some practical arts with some liberal arts? Learning how to weld or operate machine tools is just as much art as what they teach in most fine arts departments these days. And given how even a sole proprietorship has to keep corporate level books since the IRS is an implicit partner, some accounting (and business law) should be part of the core curriculum. More important than Plato, IMO.

I worked for most of my adult life in bookkeeping/accounting. Whenever I applied for a position with a company, I was required to take different tests proving math and organizational proficiency and, in the case of several jobs in Quebec, tests that proved my facility with French (not my mother tongue). Fortunately, as I am an autodidact and have no college degree, this testing was considered by prospective employers as far more indicative of competency than any accreditation document.
