Just one quick, obnoxious quibble on the George Box quote…

He spoke and wrote about the importance of the idea that "all models are wrong" frequently, with many different phrasings. The exact framing "All models are wrong, but some are useful" appears at least 2x in his published work.*

It's a nice encapsulation of 1) his idea that there is an inherent, unbridgeable gap between any model and the phenomena it is attempting to describe, 2) it is dangerous to confuse models with reality, and 3) be alert, diligent, and open about uncertainties. Epistemic humility is a great, essential thing for science.

Apparently he was not a Platonist!

Morning, William. Another fascinating lecture—thank you. I do have to take issue with your statement that a GPA can’t be negative. In Milwaukee, WI, and Detroit, MI, it has to be. Only 8% of Milwaukee Public School and just 4% of Detroit Public School 8th graders are performing math at grade level. If that doesn’t qualify as a negative GPA, I don’t know what does. And let’s not forget we’re paying for this.
