6 year old African tribal boy with a severe spinal deformity was captured on film by a Nat Geo photographer. He showed the video to a renowned step/orthopedic surgeon in Houston who selects one challenging case annually as a pro bono patient.The boy's spine curved towards his rib case and as he grew would compress the ribs and eventually crush his chest cavity and kill him.
Seven separate surgeries were required, each with a few months healing period before he could perform the next. He decided to have to child and guardian stay at his home . It would be a wonderful opportunity for his own children, a 5 year old boy and 7 year old girl to integrate the tribal boy into a modern culture and for his children to experience a very different world. Their home was magnificent. He also had a heated pool with jacuzzi jets that would be therapeutic. The boy spoke no English, of course, and the tribal language was literally monosyllabic interspersed with almost clucking sounds. The guardian/interpreter knew the language and the doctor asked " How in the hell did you learn that? " She told him it was so limited, had no tenses or conjunctions, the clucking sounds were vowels.
The surgeries were successful, the boy was growing normally and his back was straightening. He was incredible in the water , even with his curved spine prior to the first procedure. He'd never been in water deeper than above his ankles, much less a pool, which he freaked out the first time he saw it. Terrified, but quickly acclimated. 2 1/2 years later, the surgeries were complete, his back was straight and he'd grown 6 inches, much taller than the doctor's children. They were athletic in the age appropriate stand and their grammar and vocabulary were wonderful. The tribal boy , even though English was a second language and expansive, could barely construct a simple word sequence. Another child would likely have kept pace with the doctor's children.He also had the added benefit of the guardian, who served as teacher /tutor, the doctor's children wife was a stay at home mom and there was a housekeeper who spoke beautifully.It just wasn't happening for the boy. Ditto basic mathematics. But athletically, he was amazing .The kids would dance to pop music, not exactly America's got talent. The tribal boy was one with the music, he was so fluid, one would think his joints were rubber. Shoulders , knees elbows, wrists. Riveting to watch.. and dumb as mud.
