Maybe what we need is a well elaborated theory of scientific dishonesty.

When I was a kid in school, they taught us about the scientific method. But the issue of cheating in science never came up. It was kind of presumed that the scientist wanted to uncover the truth.

In addition to being a practical concern, maybe scientific dishonesty should be a theoretical concern, too. Maybe we need to articulate scientific "laws" that describe scientific cheating.

I must say that I have never relied upon statistical analysis (not being able to wrap my head around it is probably why) and consider the maxim, "The proof is in the pudding" coupled with, "First do no harm" to be all I require to make a judgement upon a subject. That, and personal experience. Consistent, reliable results across a time span of years, decades and, remembering my ancestors, centuries.
